As his daughter and her partner were unable to find a reasonably priced new bed, Handyman reader Graham Schleicher agreed to take on the challenge of building them a king-sized one from scratch.
A fan of recycling timber, he knew old pallets would get the job done.
‘Old timber pallets could easily be turned into an appealing bed base and headboard rather than just ending up as waste,’ he says.
Graham designed the bed so it could be dismantled and moved around easily, and also perforated the mattress base for ventilation.
The new bed turned out to be such a hit with his daughter, her husband and their friends that he has now been asked to build more.
