Repel ants by squirting lemon juice on windowsills and doorsills, and squeeze it into any cracks they’re using. To stop cockroaches, juice four lemons into two litres of water and wash the floor.

Get rid of caked-on food in the microwave by heating the juice of one lemon and 400ml of water in a bowl for five minutes, then wipe the surface with a clean rag. Take care as the bowl will be hot.

For hundreds of years, sailors have been using vitamin C-rich lemons to prevent scurvy. The Royal Navy still requires ships to carry enough lemons for every sailor to have 30 millilitres of juice daily.

Guacamole turns brown if left sitting, which looks unappetising. Sprinkle a few drops of lemon juice on top and it will stay fresh and green. It also complements the flavour of the avocados.

A chopping board used to cut onions, garlic, meat and fish can get smelly. To get rid of the odour and help sanitise the board, rub it all over with the cut side of half a lemon and a teaspoon of salt.
